STOP PRESS - FIREPOWER VOLUNTEER WINS AWARD
Peggy Contento has won the Special Youth Award for her work at Firepower as part of the 2010 London Volunteers in Museums Awards organised by Renaissance London. Peggy developed the Museum’s database of citations for medals, which record stories of incredible bravery by individual soldiers. The Museum aims to publish this database when it is complete.
Her step-father, Jason Mortimer, won a London Volunteers in Museums award in 2009, also for his work at Firepower. Peggy says “When my step-dad won the award, I started thinking about volunteering. I wanted to work at Firepower because I’ve always been interested in the history of war. Looking at the different stories on the medal database has been my favourite bit of work - I find it astonishing some people got so many medals. I like seeing documents and handling things that have been around since World War One – I find it so interesting that I’m actually looking at them, it seems so surreal.”
